At Iboga Root Sanctuary (Ibogaine Treatment UK), we highly recommend that all individuals enrolling in our detox program for alcohol addiction cease drinking alcohol at the very least seven days before their scheduled arrival. This is because ibogaine treatment has a unique impact on the body and can cause seizures if the user continues to consume alcohol before treatment. 

The risk of withdrawal seizures among alcoholics varies between 2% and 5%. These seizures are usually generalized and can happen within the first 48 hours after the last drink, but can also occur anytime during the first week of withdrawal. Those with a history of previous detoxifications or non-alcohol-related hospitalizations are more susceptible to experiencing withdrawal seizures due to the “kindling effect.”

The kindling hypothesis posits that each withdrawal episode acts as a stimulant to the brain, and repeated episodes of alcohol withdrawal lower the threshold for seizures to occur. This makes individuals with a history of alcohol withdrawal more likely to experience seizures in the future.

To ensure the safety of our clients, we cannot administer ibogaine treatment to individuals who have tested positive for alcohol upon arrival.
